I prefer to think for myself and not let society and media advertising brainwash me about what to think and say. Try not to slap a label on what you consider "professional" female gamers and brand them as just girls hired for their looks. If you maintain that perception then you maintain the standard.

If that's all you believe women in gaming can be, then that's what mindset this industry will keep putting forth.

As someone who has spent a lot of time around female gamers I've cultivated a pretty informed opinion about them based on personal experience. None of the girls who travel to conventions with Athena from PMS are bad at games or just giggly airheads. All the girls I spent time around were fun to play with, skilled at what they were doing and had the intelligence to play and work the booth at the same time.

All of those assets rounded-out have made far more interesting people to be around than some main-event winning male players.

Apparently you didn't read or look at any of those links. Each was linked with a female gamer that won a competition and the facebook was linked with what she has won. Capping, bolding and repeating yourself doesn't make your point any less stupid or valid.

There's a huge difference between professional gamers and media spokeswoman. Maybe you should learn the difference.

This whole conversation has become stupid.  The girls who are sponsored to sell product are not sponsored gamers.  They rarely play in tournaments, they're just pitch-people.  Yes, sex sells, especially in the sweaty nerd groups like gamers.

When it comes down to it, yes, ratios/percentages matter.  We all know that the gaming industry is dominated by adolescent to early adult males.  We also know that of those who do play, only 1% are even skilled enough to play on a national level.  So take the number of girls who do play, factor in the small percentage of an already small number who put in the time to gain the potential, and that number will be super small.  Its math.  Its not that Good/competitive gamer chicks don't exist, its just the number isn't as high as guy gamers would like.

♥♥♥♥♥, we have a local female gamer who was/is sponsored for her ability, not her looks, and she'd probably body anybody on this forum who plays her game of the month.

Yes! That is exactly what I am saying. Though lets be honest, they aren't sponsoring people, guys or girls, because they play well. They are hiring them to sell things, playing good is just what attracts those customers. So in other words be it male/female gamers or spokespeople are hired for the exact same reason. If someone is the best at some horrible game that has no following they won't get sponsored even though they annihilate every single other player. If you have the #1 and #2 female gamers in the world at X game which has a huge following a company will sponsor the better looking girl if she is better looking if they only have enough money to sponsor one player.

Its a double standard, cause guys dont care what other guys who are #1 and #2 look like and most gamer girls don't either so they take #1. Sucks

@BiPolar maybe you should read, cause I said exactly what those links went to...and I also said there were plenty of girls hired for their skills and not their looks, they just aren't the majority. Your acting like what I am saying is that I believe thats right. I don't, I said I didn't. I said its about the money and thats the way it was. It sucks but it is what it is. 3-4 examples really doesn't add to your argument. Anyways I am done with this, its not even a real discussion its just your ego taking a hit cause your reading what I wrote wrong and now your mad so you lash out. When people sponsor anyone regardless of male or female they will do so based on the amount of return in dollars. Thats the cold hard line, and the truth of the matter is the biggest dollar comes from male gamers who like seeing good looking girls playing games. I am not saying thats right or wrong im just saying thats how it is.

Okay, this thread is starting to slip out of control. We get it. The video game industry is sexist, but this threat has gotten there too.

Locked.
