You don't have to beat the best to be known. You can just be known as a quality person who is also a player. We have alot of Oklahoma players who don't necessarily win all the tournaments, but people know them when they go out of state, and when they see them on forums.
The number one way to "get known" is to participate in as many events as possible, tournaments, get togethers, etc. And that doesn't just mean in our area, that means going out of state too, and of course out of state tourney experience brings new blood and technique in-state.
You can also be known if you help with TOing or organizing events. Sticking around in the forums is a good start, but its really about in-person activities! Use the forums to further bolster your reputation as a cool dude who is genuinely interested in your game.
