New monthly Tournaments in Tulsa - but on what day?
« on: June 20, 2006, 01:27:46 AM »

EDIT 2 - The second Sundays of every month.  That's the day we are working with now.  Final approval is pending.  You'll know it's good when a thread appears in the tournaments and events forum.

--

EDIT - everything below the line is from the old post, this is a update:

Anyway - so we are officially looking to make a monthly tournaments thing happen at Funhouse.  DDR supernova, Magic, SC3 ac, and two to three other, console based games.  Smash 64, and maybe GGXX or Naruto would probably be first billings.

There would be a 3 to 5$ entry fee for the event, and Best Buy gift cards and tokens for prizes.

Something that would start around 2 or 3pm, and go till 9 or 10pm, depending on hardware and other conflicts.

Now we just need to figure out - a good day of the month.

Venue issues - they have birthday parties in the same area as we'd be playing.  So starting a '2pm till yea' tournament set - would be out on Saturday.  However - what about Sunday?

Any other day is during the week, and makes me hesitate.   Sunday though, seems good to me.  Thoughts?

We'd want to throw the younger group games first - so magic, and smash / ddr would definitely be earlier, as they tend to draw a younger crowd.

// everything below this is from the original thread starting conversation, while some of it has already been figured out, yes, I thought I'd still leave it.

--
So, I'm thinking about approaching Funhouse / the venue where I've had all the tournaments I've personally thrown and put up on this site - think over a regular / ongoing tournament schedule.

We could elect what games would be played on what dates, and set up a schedule.  Post the schedule in a sticky in here, and as the events approach, start up a thread for them.

Why?

Well, first off I'm a gamer, and I like to play.

Second off - I'm a whore for getting the word out about this site, and something regular would serve to aid in that.

Why am I a whore? And this is important...

...just like anyone that wants to do anything and promote it on any site, I'm fighting a big evil cycle here.

Getting gamers to the site?  Requires events/reason to be here to want to make them come.

Getting events on the site?  Requires giving organizers the crowds to want to come advertise.

Gamers want events.  Organizers want to see gamers.

So far - I've been waging the war against laziness and disconnection in the ways of throwing events that my friends have wanted to draw attention, and printing flyers to get the word and url out.  This has put a slight dent into the at least Tulsa area of Oklahoma.  Now - I want more - a serious sledge hammer sized effect heh.

Free advertising is out there - one method?  The Urban Tulsa.

They currently have several 'ongoing events' sections in their what's going on / events section of the paper.  One friend has used them several times - once for auditions for their movie, and another he's familiar with because of the Oklahoma Film types meet regularly, and the Urban Tulsa puts their meeting in there.

What if - we had such a thing going for us?

First off - realize I've already submitted the 2 events that were posted about as of last week - the SC3 AE tournament and the Guitar Hero tournaments.  First in the email, I stated we had ongoing events and tournaments.  Which is true.  However - I haven't heard back from them, and of course fear the worse heh.

So - this all brings me to - regular tournaments in Tulsa?

I was thinking we could all have our games included.  Some Smash 64 perhaps to start it off.  Then SC or Tekken or both.  Then if we could corral enough hardware types and players - maybe a Halo thing.  Naruto I'd love to see outted from their Minicon / Anime con only event status lol.   And maybe even throw those GGXX types a bone.  Maybe even - a Magic tournament?

In that spirit of inclusion, I could just approach Wizards Asylum and see if they have a ongoing tournament line up / would want to do one, and just assimilate that in there.

Location and game - does not matter.  We just need to establish a 'weekly / monthly' whatever timeline, and have the talent / resource pool to keep it going, and get the word out there.

--

It's an idea.  Just like this whole site, I'd love to do it, and I'd love to advance the cause.  Read more at my 'future changes and inspiration' post here -

Sounds like it would all be a very good idea. Then gamers at Fun House are gonna be like, "What's with that group of people over there?" And if we don't want to do a tournament how about just show up, hang out, play some putt-putt and pool and just kinda chill for a bit.

I know you've normally done things at 9 p.m. and what-not but to get some of the younger crowd involved, including me, we'd have to start things off at an earlier time. I live a little ways away from Fun House and my dad wouldn't be happy if I was driving around town that late. Most gamers are still young and therefore have to please parents.

The other big thing is, like you mentioned, pulling in other organizations. If we can get other organizations in on this then more advertising for us, and some much needed advertising at that, then we can plan even bigger tournaments.

As for the games, I say do everything. Halo of course is a big score point but if you can get a 64 Smash Bros. tournament going that's going to score big points because who doesn't love that game? Plus, I think we could work out something for Goldeneye also. Doing it at Fun House ensures that we have plenty of arcade games to pick from so our possibilities are endless we just gotta get the gamers.

Funhouse? Great idea. Gamers surrounded by games everywhere. Sounds wonderful. Let's broaden those horizons for what games are included. Add maybe a few Xbox, PS2, PS, or GCN games. Not to say that i'm beyond an N64, I still love that system. I just think that broadening the scope of the systems might attract more people. Oh, and there should definitely be some goldeneye or perfect dark action at the tourney

Well, as for what day of the week I guess Sunday really would be the best it's just a problem for those of us with church. My evening services are over at 6 and whenever Fun House moves to Riverwalk, that's just right by my church, so that would make it even easier. Of course with things like youth devos and what-not will hinder me from going sometimes but I would try to make it every chance I could. If more hardware is needed I can also help supply a bit sometimes.

I also beleive games wise we should include Halo 2. I know it's an overrated game and what-not but it's really fun and it gets other gamers attention quick. If they have a LAN they can go to and play a bit of Halo 2 along with the other games they'll be happy. But, there are some people who wish for nothing but to play Halo 2 so we would need it to pull them in. And I know theres a million other games we can bring I'm just saying we might want to include this a bit more.

For doing it at Fun House I have to say I can think of almost no better place. I think it's the best spot just cause it's an arcade. Having it there means when your not playing games, you still get to play games! You get to play a wide variety of games and never have to stop playing. Between rounds of playing console with us you get to go play pinball or something. I would also say look at Incredible Pizza but honestly, a lot of the games they have are crap.

And one more thing, I think we could also plan days to meet at Cyber Zone occasionally for Xbox and PC games with each other and on the net. Might be something to think about when we get some hardcore gamers in on this. Starting out at Fun House will start to expose us to everyone we just have to do what we can to get the word out.

I don't like the idea of giving money to the company that is making FH move.  I have been going there since the late 80's and I feel bad that they are going to have to uproot for the third time due to some pseudo-christian company selling bad pizza and promoting non-violent games.  Lets continue to support Funhouse.

Well, a quick shout out on what Hozanto is saying, not only do I agree, as they literally moved in with the plan to put the 2 prime Tulsa arcades out of business, but they are also stationed out of MS, and frankly I rather support locally owned and operated businesses.  Keeps it in the community, but also is easier to deal with / less red tape.

Yea, I too was worried about the church thing, however at the point of making it accessable to all - there's really no other date.  Any day during the week - starting something as early as 2, or even 5 or 6 is going to play havoc on anyone trying to get there from work - just wouldn't work.  Also - Saturday is probably the definition of off limits.  There is a CHANCE that the business pattern will be favorable for Saturday stuff at FH - but I seriously doubt it.  Saturday would be best, but Sunday I think would do it.

Halo - I'm totally down for including into all this - we'd just need to get people dedictated enough to bring hardware / run it.  I know nothing about the game when it comes to running a successful tourny, and would have to allow someone else to do that.  If we had that taken care of, yea, Halo 2 at this deal would be practically be guranteed, as I want to specifically help out that community locally as well.

And here's another big one - we promote the day - and the info on the site - not the location.  We could have multiple locations on one day and still consider it all under the same banner of said Monthly Tournaments in Tulsa.   Maybe we should come up with a name...

Anyway - so we could have DDR, SC, Smash64, Halo and maybe something else at FH, and then also on the same day have Magic and any other good card games out there at another location, perhaps Wizards Asylum, and so forth.  Cyberzone, I talked to the owner, and until they move into their huge new location they are building, they probably won't have another tournament for Halo - so meh.

But - that's kinda my idea.  I'd like to talk to the owner of Wizard's and see what he thinks of it.  I'd also like to continue to get input on the Sunday vs Saturday vs yea debate.  And of course, what games we should consider.

Also, on a parting note.  I don't know of any other arcade in the region that's supporting console gaming as strong as Funhouse is warming up to.  It's fairly revolutionary imo.  In France, they'd have console tournaments in locations like Burger King of all things, but in the States, there just doesn't seem to be a solution.  I hope this kinda support takes off, as console gamers need tournaments [and getting out of their houses lol] and I think arcades are a natural solution.  I'm glad Funhouse is forward thinking, cause yea, this makes alot of these things easier.

Location mainly.  Funhouse is rented out like woah on Fridays and Saturdays.  For now - Funhouse has done us right, and until we seriously outgrow them or something - I'd like to continue supporting them.  Also - they are just a great location - considering we can get flyers out into the community, it's already a gaming oriented location, and some of the games we have tournaments for they have the games - Soul Calibur, DDR, and now a Initial D tournament has started up, so yea.  Good location, and best day for the location.
